Great for recording video game consoles

To start off, I'm writing this review solely from the perspective of someone using this to record footage from video game consoles (an Xbox 360, in my case), because that's why I bought it and that's all I've used it for so far.

Upon opening the box, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there was a component cable included, a nice bonus. The first thing you'll notice is how light the device itself is. The all-plastic body and the lack of weight contribute to give it a slight cheap feeling, but this is not reflective of the overall quality of the device, as I'm about to explain.

The HD PVR has pass-through outputs, which means you can plug your console into the PVR and then the PVR into your TV (with the included component cable), eliminating the need to split the signal. I was a little bit worried about any input lag caused by the pass-through, but I was thankful to discover that there is absolutely none. The one downside of this, if any, is that the PVR has to be on for the pass-through outputs to work. It doesn't have to be recording and the software doesn't have to be open, so it's not that big of a deal, but it's just one more device that is sapping power.

After getting everything hooked up, you have to install the included software on whatever PC you're going to be using to record. The software installation was pain-free, although I recommend getting the latest driver updates from their website and the latest software updates through the software itself. Make sure that you do NOT lose the CD, as you can only download the driver from Hauppauge's website, not the included software. One of the downsides of the PVR is that only the included software and a small list of 3rd party software will work with the device. Luckily, this isn't that big of an issue as the included software works great, with minimal issues.

One of the great things about the HD PVR is that it does all of the H.264 encoding on the box itself. In other words, you won't need a high-end PC to record in HD because the HD PVR does all of the heavy processing. You will need a high-end PC to watch and edit HD video, however. Unless you're just archiving or using the PC as a storage device (and then accessing the recorded videos on your 360, for instance), you're going to want a high-end PC to edit and playback the video that you record. There's simply no getting around this: if you want to produce videos in HD, you're going to need the tools for it.

The preview window provides smooth, full-quality video. There is a significant amount of lag between the source and the software preview window, however. If you were hoping to sit at your PC and play by watching the preview window, you can forget it. The input lag will make it impossible.

Overall, the video and audio quality are excellent. This will produce video miles beyond any SDi capture card you have. The device will record in whatever format you input (1080i, 720p, etc.). I would recommend going with 720p over 1080i. The lack of interlacing outweighs the gain in resolution, in my opinion (unless you're taking a screenshot or taking video with little movement). It support frame rates up to 60fps, maybe beyond. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 720p at 60fps looks absolutely beautiful. The device lets you change the bitrate from 1MBps to 13.5MBps, so you can increase the quality of the video and sacrifice a small file size, if you wish. I find 8MBps to be a good balance. It allows you to fit 1 - 1.5 hours into around 5GB, and it still provides video that's good enough for YouTube HD uploads and similar casual usage. If you're going for production-quality video with almost no compression artifacts, you can easily increase the bit rate, but you're going to pay for it in file size and the power it requires to process.

All video is encoded in H.264. The software lets you record in 3 container formats: .TS, which is a generic 'transport stream' compatible with many digital media players; .M2TS, which is compatible with the Sony Playstation 3; and .MP4, which is compatible with the Xbox 360. These are somewhat-confusingly labeled "AVCHD", "PlayStation 3", and "Xbox 360" in the software, respectively. It's important to note that *this has nothing to do with what you're recording from* - it only has bearing on what device you want to play back the recorded footage. The MP4 format will play back on an Xbox 360, while the other formats will not. I recommend choosing the format that works best with whatever software you're going to use to edit the video, or whatever device you plan on using to watch the video. Note that most software will be able to open/edit an MP4 file, while I've found less compatibility with the other formats. If you plan to burn footage to Blu-Ray disk, though, go with .TS, as it's the format used on Blu-Ray disks and so your video won't require any transcoding, which is very nice (you can burn a Blu-Ray disk in just a few minutes).

If you don't want your footage encoded in H.264, there is an included converter program that can convert to variety of formats, but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't tell you how well it works.

The only two minor issues that I've had have involved the software. Sometimes the capture program will not recognize the device, requiring you to unplug it from the computer and plug it back in, at which point it should work normally. It's not that big of an issue, and it may be specific to my computer, but it's worth noting.

Secondly, the included playback application, TotalMedia Theater, causes a hard reboot whenever I try to start it. This also isn't that big of a deal because there's lots of other software that can play back the recorded files. Based on searches in which I've found only a couple of mentions about the problem it appears to be a very rare issue, but it's still worth noting. (I'm using Vista 32-bit, for reference).

Overall, the HD PVR is great for recording footage from hi-def consoles like the 360 and PS3. It's easy to use, doesn't require an insanely powerful PC, and produces good-quality video and audio in a good format at a reasonable file-size. Although the price is a bit steep, it's worth it if you really want to record high-quality, high-definition game footage from your 360 or PS3. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in a response and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.

Not for the faint of heart

Here's the summary:

- Not a DVR. This is a pass-thru from audio/video source to PC.

- Generates H.264 at Baseline Profile 1.0 only -- not the High Profile 4.1 that x264.exe-based programs generate. The Baseline H.264 quality is not as good as the High Profile quality using the same bit rate.

- Generates default .M2TS files which are difficult to edit -- use the .TS file output instead for easier editing.

- Arcsoft software is good for capturing and that's it. The software for creating a disk always seems to re-encode -- a process that takes my PC days or makes my PC hang.

- After capture, I have to use third-party software to finish production.

The product is not an easy out-of-the box solution. Hookup is easy, and the Arcsoft software installation is easy, capturing is easy, but it gets tricky after that.

When you capture, you can set bitrates. I set my 720x480i broadcast to 4.1 MB/s thinking it would be fine. When I made a disk and played it on the Blu Ray player, the video had a horribly compressed look. That was a straight H.264 file from the HD-PVR 1212 unit to disk without transcoding. But when I transcode some other high-quality 480i video using an x264.exe-based application with 4.1 MB/s the video quality is fine.

Now I made the mistake of capturing my first video in .M2TS. Tried to edit it. Lots of software doesn't like .M2TS. I didn't know that then, but I know now. Fortunately I was able to use the freeware TSRemux to convert the .M2TS file to a .TS file. Now apps like H264TS_Cutter and multiAVCHD are happier. Lots of crashes and failures with .M2TS.

Editing. I use H264TS_Cutter to cut out commercials. This app is handy -- you take clips you want to save and create a cut without transcoding. This is important in the H.264 video world because transcoding takes days on my PCs, but the H264TS_Cutter makes a cut in minutes. You can also join two files in this manner. H264TS_Cutter has never crashed on me with .TS files. I tried using a little more complicated app for cutting -- TS Packet Editor -- but I had to reboot my PC after each file edit.

Creating a video disk. I use multiAVCHD. It lets me make a simple menu for the multiple titles. To get this to generate a Blu-Ray format file structure, I had to (after clicking Start) select the button [AVCHD compatible players] -- the button [For all Blu-ray players] wouldn't work in my Blu-Ray player.

The size of the output files determines what size disk I can use. I use Imgburn to burn to DVD-5, DVD-9, or BD-25 -- this plays in my Blu-Ray player as long as I choose the UDF physical format and UDF 2.50.

That's the quick way of taking the output from the HD-PVR 1212 and placing it on Blu-Ray compatible disk. If all this that I've described sounds like Greek, be wary of this purchase. You'll need to do your homework on using these 3rd-party apps (though fortunately the ones I've described are free) to keep the production time to a minimum and spare yourself days of needless suffering. Had these tools been included and described in the bundled software for this purchase, it would have saved me about two weeks of trial, research, and error.

Best Hi def recorder on the market currently

June posting

ok I would have given this 5 stars but this comes with current problem with it, this has optical in for 5.1DD recording at this time hauppuage can not get this to work so you are stuck with PCM 2.0 or audio from the analog imputs, now to the rest, it records video at 1920x1080 at same or near Blu ray discs, you have a choice of bitrate constant from 1 to 13.5 Kb or on variable all the way up to 20.2, this records in the same codeec (AVCHD) as blu ray and HD DVD discs, it will take any component imput, I have mine through my receiver where my Dishnet PVR HD, PS3, HD DVD and Oppo DVD player runs through, just for test purposes I tried all my devices and what I test recorded from dishnet, blu ray, DVD and HD DVD the test disc looked no different than the original source, once you capture your source you can then edit or add chapters then you get to add a real cheapo menu and then put in what disc you need to burn either a DVD-R or a dual layer DVD Disc, it takes about 10 minutes to author your recording to Blu ray standard and burn on your normal DVD as a true Blu ray playable Disc, beware once you burn your DVD as a blu ray playback DVD you will not be able to read it in your computer again unless you have a Blu ray Rom or Blu Ray Burner, once and if Hauppuage ever gets the 5.1 DD fixed this could be the killer to blu ray Discs, hauppuage claims by next driver release they will include the 5.1 fix. Beware this is Xp service pack 2 or Vista operating system only, also you must have a fast computer to use this device and its programs, I have a dual core 3.4 gig Intel, 2gigs of ram, 2 - 500 sata HDD and had to buy a nvidia 7600 512 meg video card to get this up to speed and at the fastest bitrate 13,500 I cant do anything else on the computer, but this is the problem with Hi def, its power hungry, now I can finally put my hi def movies of all 6 star wars and 3 lord of the rings on DVD for 1080i blu ray playback, you can also convert the finished files over to movie factory 6 to burn on a normal DVD for HD DVD playback also.

August update...
Ok been doing alot of capturing, have made 40 dual layer DVDs for blu ray playback and 10 dual layers for HD DVD playback. the video qua;ity is great if you keep it above 7.8 bitrate, only major drawback is no 5.1DD audio, I am now Beta tesing the 5.1DD audio driver right now, wow this makes a huge difference with the sound. Problems still, wont work with the arch software yet, sync problems, but works with TSmuxer. There seems to be heat related issues with some boxes, mine stays on 7, 10, 15 hours at a time never gets overly warm and never locks up. I have done well over 100 captures with this device. Having an Lg blu ray burner and blanks getting below $8 each, this might be the future for capturing and buring HD content at the PVR's full 13.2 to 20.0 bitrate in the future. If hauppauge can just tweak this 5.1DD driver a bit more I think this will be a great little device.

October update,
I am now a beta tester for hauppauge and I finally got 5.1DD drivers and TME software that works, so now I got a card that finally works capturing movies the way I wanted it to, 5.1DD and can also edit with the software and no more sync issues, burn to dual layers DVD's or $4 blu ray discs.

December Update
Ok Hauppauge support finally has Drivers and software out for general public that makes this device work properly. you can capture 1080i from any component ouput using the 5.1DD and you get a great captured TS or M2TS file ready to burn to a blu ray or dual layer DVD with or without menu. since october I have captured and burned over 50 movies onto disc in 5.1DD and they look great, the ones from the 1080p sources look really great. Now I manually record all my movies, so I do not know how this works with a timer or sageTV.

Feb Posting

some here wanted me to post to let you know of known problems with this and dishnet, I find there is no exact problems per say with the PVR1212 and Dishnet, you should know that sometimes when you use this device with the dishnet you get out of sync problems and digital tears in the picture, most, if no all is the blame of dishnet or most likey the channel the show is broadcast from. Example: I have tried 7-8 times to capture and record Spaceballs from MGM HD channel every time its out of sync and every time its being played out of sync on MGM HD over dishnet before I even capture it. Please keep in mind when using this device, HD content is never perfect and they "big hollywood" does not want you to capture and record their programs. So dont be surprised if "they" are always trying anything to foil you capturing a Hi Def Digital program, be it dish, cable, PS3 or HD-DVD. so far I have captured and burned onto dual layer DVD's 130 movies from all such sources all coming out perfect, be it analog, 2DD or 5.1DD audio. yeah where else can you watch on a disc, star wars, lord of the rings, batman, star trek movies in hi def, way to go hauppauge. :)

Great piece of hardware, horrible software

This review is from: Hauppauge-WinTV-PVR-350 TV Tuner/Personal Video Recorder (Personal Computers)
4/28/05 - I have to update this review (from 10/1/04). I have since upgraded to Windows Media Center Edition 2005. This card is great with MCE. There are cheaper Hauppauge cards that also work fine with MCE, so it might be worth taking a look at them before spending the $ on this card. I also wanted to change this review to 5 stars, but Amazon doesn't seem to allow changes to the star rating.

After years of owning various ATI All-In-Wonder video cards, I decided it would be cheaper to go ahead and buy a TV only card, and not have to spend a fortune everytime it was time to upgrade my video card. Quick and to the point, here are my findings :

Negatives :
1. The 'web based' program guide is a very clumsy interface. I would much rather have a application based program guide.
2. No matter what I try, channel 2 always has ghosting. I know it's the card because I had the same cable plugged into my ATI AIW with no problems, and also plugged it into a TV with no picture problems. Maybe moving the card further away from the video card will help?
3. While I'm sure there is a way, I have yet to find how to change the recording quality. After fumbling through the software I finally gave up.

Positives :
1. The FM Radio program is pretty slick, and the reception is ok. No complaints.
2. Unlike the ATI AIW cards (and probably the TV Wonder's) you can set the program to automatically mute while recordinging and close the application when it's done recording. You still have to go back into the scheduler and modify EACH individual scheduled task. It would be nice to either highlight all and change them all at once, OR set a default for all new recordings.
3. Hardware based TV OUT is nice.
4. PLENTY of 3'rd party software supports this card. This is a big plus since in my opinion the software that comes with the card is lacking.

I would have gave this card 5 stars if the bundled software was better. Plan on purchasing SageTV or similar if you plan on buying this card.

Good, but not for everyone
By A Customer
This review is from: Hauppauge-WinTV-PVR-350 TV Tuner/Personal Video Recorder (Personal Computers)
The card does work as expected but I cannot recommend it for current Hauppauge customers. Read the FAQ on the Hauppauge web page before purchase. I had to disable my current Hauppauge TV card before installing this PCR card. This is the primary problem with card for me.

A secondary issue is that my TV and computer are very close together and on at the same time. This was fine with the original TV card but with the PVR-350 card there is a delay causing an echo effect with the sound, so either my TV or the PVR-350 must be muted.

The only real Bug I have found is if you are using the PVR-350 in Pause or REC mode when a scheduled program starts. The scheduled program kicks you of your current mode and starts recording. However, this card does not currently allow you to change channels while in Pause or REC mode, so your scheduled record will record what you were watching but not what was scheduled! The channel indicator does show what was scheduled but it does not match the screen unless by luck you were watching the same channel as was scheduled.

The final irritation for me is use of remote while in Pause mode. If you hit the skip 10 seconds button too fast the signal appears to be misread and it kicks you out of Pause with loss of data! This has never occured when I use the computer controls.
BTW: No information such as channel number or menu is shown on your primary TV. This limits the use of the remote.

I would highly recommend this card if your first TV card and primary use will be at the computer.

Nice little box, but not without flaws.
This review is from: AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder (Electronics)
I primarily bought this to record video games while playing them. I did some recordings and used the video editing software. The quality (720p) is nice and the video was as I had expected and hoped. The interface is simple and easy to use. It is great for what I want it for. Now onto the flaws that I have encountered. First off - the most annoying one which may be a problem with my box in particular. The component connection coming in from the video game source often loses one of the color connections making it look awful. Unfortunately it is captured this way and it simply takes me just slightly moving the box or touching the cables to fix (I have tried different sets of cables). Second problem for you gamers out there. The software seems to have a problem adjusting when the source adjusts resolutions. Example is on the PS3 - I am on the XMB screen prior to loading the game, but once the game loads it adjusts the resolution. At this point the capture screen goes gray and doesn't seem to pick up the source video anymore. If you started your recording prior to starting the game, you would be recording gray the rest of the way. The last problem I had seems to be a software issue, but I can't be sure. I plugged an HDMI cable in for output. NOTE: The HDMI cable is NOT for passthrough to be used during recordings. It is only for media playback. I cannot however playback any media other than what I have recorded directly through the box. Granted it looked great on my 55" 1080p 120Hz LCD, but I could not playback any other video files even though it is supposed to be able to. Everytime I hit the button to output to HDMI, I get a gray screen. Despite submitting a support ticket going on a month ago, they continuously tell me that they are researching the problem. This was a big selling point for me and a bit of a disappointment. Final thoughts - it is solidly built and seems to be well priced for what it does compared to competition. The processing of the capture on the box takes the load off of the PC while allowing you to store and edit directly on the computer. I do recommend the product for it's ease of use and quality per price, but want to warn gamers of the above issues that I encountered. Good luck!

Awful Support

This review is from: AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder (Electronics)
This product would be fantastic i this company had a shred of customer service. My DVR is obviously defective. It shuts off after 2-5 minutes of use every time and nothing will change that. I've tried on 8 different occasions to contact their customer service department. This includes, leaving voicemail, sending email, and posting on their help forums. I have had no replies.

The product would be great if it worked. What I have seen it produce is very high quality and frankly just looks damn good.

Do not buy this if you want any amount of decency or support from the company. I assume not all of these arrive DOA, but this is a chance that you should not have to worry about with a product that costs almost $200.

It's nearly perfect!
This review is from: AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder (Electronics)
Once you figure out how it works and get it to work with all of the updates and other downloads required to use it, it's perfectly fine. Took me two or so days to get it up and running, but that's no big deal. I bought it to record video games from my Xbox and PS3, and it does just that perfectly! Xbox can't display at 1080p/1080i with component cables, so obviously the recorder doesn't do well with that. However, PS3 component cables can go up to 1080p, and the thing records in 1080i just fine and it looks really nice! The 720p on Xbox is also very good quality, and I've gotten several compliments on how my videos look.

The biggest problem I have with it is how it records. It saves the files in .ts, which is not compatible with my editing software. It comes with a file transfer program, and it takes about two hours per hour of recorded footage. It can only transfer to 30 frames a second, so Call of Duty or Super Meat Boy (games that run at 60 frames per second) videos aren't as smooth as they could be. That takes a lot of time to do, switching file types, and makes you wonder why they didn't make the box record in a more friendly file type in the first place. Also, I have to put a cloth over the light at night so it doesn't light up my whole room.

I've been using this since October 2010, and have recorded a TON of videos with it. It doesn't get too hot and can record for at least 6 hours (longest I've recorded). Overall this cap card has really nice quality and is easy to use.

The Most Underrated Capture Card in the Market
This is one of the best capture cards to date. I can catch 1080i video game footage on my 360 and upload it to YouTube where it looks amazing.

Some problems, but a good product overall.
Just to start off, I use this for the xbox 360 only. I'm building a gaming website and need something like this, so I figured I would save like $30-40 from buying the Hauppage...

Great Product! Does it's job.
When I bought this product I knew exactly what I wanted to use it for. This product is great for capturing gameplays from my Xbox 360 in HD and putting it onto my hard drive...

Product flickers through passthrough...
The product has a pass through which could be used to record gameplay from a PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Wii, but it has issues with flickering at times.

Awesome pvr
This is a great product. Easy to install and start using fast. I've been using it to record my Gamebattles matches from my xbox 360.

Not bad for the price....
This review is from: Hauppauge 1340 MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player (Personal Computers)
For the price paid (less than $75), it's not half bad. I connected it to my LAN and HDTV, configured for DHCP, and was easily able to detect my Ubuntu Linux based Mediatomb server.

When I attempted playback of various media, I wasn't able to get sound over HDMI. I then tried component video (YPbPr) successfully. I went back to HDMI, lowered the bit rate for the sound, and had it up and running fine (including 720p .MKV playback).

From time-to-time the screen goes blank when you've been wandering around in the menus for too long and as of now, I have not been able to make use of the USB port (always reads folder empty no matter what's connected). I have a trouble ticket in with Hauppauge, will update with results.

Pros:
Low price
Played every video format I threw at it
1080p HDMI Output
Decent WAF (Wife Approval Factor)
Instinctive remote control (could be better)
Intuitive on-screen menus
Easy network setup
Automatic video setup built into the software

Cons:
Unit itself could look better
OSD needs polishing: speed, smoothness, fonts are big & blocky (can't really complain for the price)
Has to reboot after some setting changes
Screen goes blank every now and again while in the menu system
No automatic audio setup

Conclusion:
Setup could have gone more smoothly. For the problem I had with sound over HDMI, there was nothing in the manual, on the website, or in any of the forums that gave me any insight on this problem. I literally stumbled onto the fix. The problem was likely due to the limitations of my HDTV, but the average consumer might not catch that. Although it's not important to my intended application, I'm still waiting on an answer for my USB port issue. All-in-all, for what I purchased it for, (multi-format Upnp/DLNA player w/ HDMI output) it's not horrible when you take into consideration that other comparable consumer products cost anywhere from $30 to $125 more and a custom-built PC with an HDMI output could cost upwards of $400 to $500 at a minimum.

Update (12/20/2010):
I've not heard anything beyond the initial response (addressing my already resolved audio over HDMI issue) from Hauppauge support. I've also discovered that the MediaMVP-HD cannot play OGM video. The format is summarily ignored by the media browser (as in doesn't even show up as unknown). Although it's not advertised as one of the supported formats, I'm still disappointed. As for .MKV playback, if you have an MKV video with multiple audio tracks, there's no way to switch betewwn the two tracks. I also contacted Hauppauge about this and have gotten no answer. Prehaps I'll have better luck after the holidays.

Update (03/30/2011):
Still no response from Hauppauge, I've moved on to using a PC with XBMC Live installed. The MediaMVP will still serve as a spare in my workshop, but isn't quite smooth and polished enough (software-wise) for my living room system. Eye candy is important.

A great connected media player
This review is from: Hauppauge 1340 MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player (Personal Computers)
I've had a Hauppage HD PVR for about a year now, and I've been recording my HD TV programs (I have a library of TrueBlood, Lost and Heroes) from my Fios box and burning them onto a CD for playback on my Blu-ray player in my living room. But I've wanted to just simply play the recordings back to my HD TV in the living room instead of going through the "record/burn" steps.
So I picked up one of the MediaMVP-HD's. It basically did just what I wanted.
I hooked up the MVP up to my HD TV set in the living room (I used HDMI to connect to my Samsung "B" series LCD TV). I have an ethernet connection in my living room, so the connection for me was pretty simple. I then scanned my network and found both my PC where the HD PVR is connected and also my laptop computer. In about 5 minutes I was able to play the HD PVR recordings from my PC to the HD TV set.
I like the fast skip buttons (you hit 0 to 9 on the remote control to go to different spots in your recording) and I like being able to adjust the volume from the MVP remote control.
The video quality on my Samsung is incredible, I guess due to the HD PVR recordings but also (I assume) to the HDMI output on the MVP.
Wireless would be nice to have on the MVP, though I didn't need this on my TV set in the living room. I have another HD TV in the bedroom which does not have an ethernet cable, so I'd need wireless there.
Also, I liked the front panel USB port on the MVP, where I've been plugging in my digital pictures which I keep stored on my thumb drive.
In my opinion, if you have an HD PVR, you need to get a MVP so you can avoid burning blu-ray disks when you want to play your HD PVR recordings onto your HD TV set.

1340 MediaMVP HD digital player
This review is from: Hauppauge 1340 MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player (Personal Computers)
I bought this player based on the review and price. It took me a while to setup and got it working after a struggle. I have Gigabit network in my home. First the network cable was really loose and did not get connected then one of the cable with support connected to the network. Photo browsing did not work as a 4MB file took 15 minutes to load and the software froze. Only good thing was the video played well accessing the files from the network. It did not play .MKV files. The software indicated as "Beta" while trying to play .MKV files and did not have audio. I will not recommend this hardware. I returned this hardware in a week after trying everything possible.

Watch Analog, Cable and Digital TV on your PC
The WinTV HVR-1950 Tuner/Video Recorder lets you watch NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM Digital Cable TV directly on your computer, either in a window or on full screen. Why miss your favorite sitcom or the deciding playoff game just because you have work to do?

This unique tuner supports NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC Digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM digital cable TV. NTSC is the analog cable TV standard, and ATSC is the over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and typically requires an antenna for reception. Clear QAM digital cable allows you to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from your cable TV provider without a set-top box.

The tuner also features a built-in 125 channel cable-ready TV tuner, allowing you to watch Analog TV and Clear QAM Digital TV by connecting to your cable box. For analog cable TV reception, you need an analog cable TV connection. If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1950 can connect via either Composite or S-Video inputs. For ATSC over-the-air digital TV reception, a high-gain antenna is recommended. (To check the ATSC TV broadcasts in your area, go to TitanTV.com and enter your postal code. Note: depending on the strength of your antenna, you might not be able to receive all broadcasts listed at TitanTV.)

Schedule and Record your Favorite Show
With the on-board MPEG-2 encoder, which allows your PC to run at full speed while recording, the WinTV-HVR-1950 lets you record analog cable TV while allowing your PC to operate at full speed while recording, so you won't sacrifice any performance.

Digital TV programs are recorded in their original video quality, so 1080i programs are recorded at 1080i, and so on. With WinTV-Scheduler software installed, you can also turn your PC into a virtual PVR and schedule and record your TV shows automatically.

Analog TV recordings typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour using Hauppauge's SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center. High-definition TV recordings typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour.

Other features include a Dolby-TV stereo decoder for Dolby-quality audio, and a remote control that lets you control satellite and TV set top boxes for the ultimate in convenience. The WinTV-HVR-1950 is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center.

What's in the Box
WinTV-HVR-1950 USB 2.0 External Box, USB cable, Hauppauge Remote Control (with batteries), IR blaster cable, WinTV installation and utilities software CD-ROM, Ulead DVD Movie Factory Software on CD, and quick installation guide.

Great with Media Center...

This review is from: Hauppauge 1192 WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder (Personal Computers)
This is my second tuner and far exceeds the 'average' tuner I purchased at a local electronics store. Hauppauge provided excellent customer service helping me decide which tuner was best for my computer and my needs. I have a new HP system running Vista 64-bit and wanted a tuner to run with the Media Center already installed. It did not come with a TV tuner. The HVR-1950 model 1192 comes with an external MPEG-2 encoder which doesn't draw resources from the computer. Great for watching TV while working in other programs simultaniously. It also comes with it's own viewing program (WinTV V6) which I find relatively user friendly but I prefer to use Media Center for TV viewiewing, recording, and scheduling. The USB connection makes installation easy. Setup in Media Center was simple and picture quality and sound is as good as fatory installed Hauppauge tuners.
The package also comes with an FM radio antenna, remote control, and IR Blaster to control channel changing on cable or satellite boxes.
My only complaint was over the initial setup. Although the instructions are fairly complete for XP and Vista OS they do not address Vista-64 issues thoroughly. For Vista-64 users only, if you receive a message about "No device attached or no driver installed" even after going through the driver installation, you need to download the driver specfically for Vista 64 bit OS for the HVR-1950. http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hvr1950.html. I had to hunt this down on Hauppauge website but once that driver is downloaded, setup completed perfectly and installation was complete. It was a little work but well worth the results. I love the tuner and my Media Center!

Great product, bad users!

This review is from: Hauppauge 1192 WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder (Personal Computers)
I've read a lot of the reviews on this product with the majority of them bad mouthing it. I really like this product and I'll tell you why, but before I do, I'll give you some information on myself: 20 y/o male, currently residing in Greenbelt, MD right on the border of D.C., somewhat tech savvy running Vista Ultimate-32bit and use plain old rabbit ears from an old (and I mean an OLD tv).

Installion was a breeze, as easy as 1-2-3. You connect everything to HVR-1950, plug in your USB cable and vista does the majority of the work for you. The tuner comes with a driver/program cd that Vista will ask you to pop in after not being able to find the drivers online. At this point you can pop in the disk or go to the support site and download the latest version of the driver (which you should have done before hand anyway). Once its installed you can setup Media center or Wintv. I like media better so I can't say anything for Wintv because I haven't used it. Media center TV setup is so Barney style my 7 year old brother could do it on his computer if I'd let him. You follow the steps, read the screens, and push the pretty buttons. Once you've configured the device for MCE, and found all the channels your antenna, cable, or top set, and downloaded the t.v. guide your ready to watch some tv. Now here's where I'm seeing a few people get mush for brains, some stations are still broadcasting in ANALOG (usually the lower channels like 2,4,6,etc. at least in my area)!!! So your not going to get digital clarity from those channels!!! Its going to be fuzzy, have ghosting, etc. The higher channels are DIGITAL!!! So just go through the edit channel menu and delete all those nasty ugly analog channels cause you don't need them.

I was so impressed with the clarity and quality of the digital channels that I actually watched American Idol and Dancing with the stars because it looked that good. The sound was crisp and clear. The only thing I don't like about this thing is I can't record one show and watch another or record two shows and doing something (Like most DVRs let you do) that kind of upset me so I took a star off for that. Also when you record something it makes you watch that channel. If I wanted to watch it I wouldn't be recording it! lol. Even with those minor flaws the thing is amazing and I'm glad I spent the money.

AMAZING!!!!

This review is from: Hauppauge 1192 WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder (Personal Computers)
This product exceeded my expectations with quality and functions. Not only is it a clear picture the remote supplied works flawlessly with Media Center (Vista). Your able to record tv, play movies, it even pulls up all the information up for a movie that you recorded on tv. If your going to purchase any tv tuner this is the one. With built in radio that you can record off of too. But you need to use Vista in order to use all the functions.

Good luck

Best Capture Card Ever
This review is from: Hauppauge Colossus PCI Express Internal HD-PVR (Personal Computers)
After going through a horrific experience with AverTV HD DVR, I bought this product directly through Hauppauge. This card tops AverTV HD DVR 10 fold. No questions asked.

Best part, this card does all of the video encoding, meaning your PC's CPU hardly does anything at all. The quality that it gives is incredible with the file size being relatively small. Colossus gets captured using software such as WinTV and Arcsoft. WinTV records into a format of .ts. You can easily import the .ts file into adobe premiere if you rename .ts to .mpg. No problem.

You can record pretty much anything except for PS3 through HDMI, but you can record Xbox 360 and PC through HDMI.

Pros:
Hardware Encoder (No CPU Usage)
Excellent Quality
Great Software
Video and Audio are in sync

Cons:
None.

Works great ... very happy!
This review is from: Hauppauge Colossus PCI Express Internal HD-PVR (Personal Computers)
I've been thinking about upgrading my archiving capabilities for a while now. For the last 5 years or so, I used a Panasonic DVD recorder to offload my shows and football games from my Directv HD DVR. It did the job quite nicely. However, I really wanted to go HD all the way to the disk. I was looking for the simplest solution possible. That means, capture the footage, edit it(with no re-encoding), make the menus and burn the file to disk while maintaining excellent quality.

I ended up getting the Hauppauge HDPVR about 2 months ago and was quite happy with it. I happen to come across the Hauppauge Colossus purely by accident, and fortunately for me, was able to return the HD PVR before the 30 days were up. My main reasons for keeping the Colossus were:

1)It costs less
2)It's an internal PCI-e card
3)It can record at a higher bitrate
4)It can record from an unencrypted HDMI source

First of all, let me just say that I only use the Colossus to capture shows off my Directv HD DVR. I don't use the WinTv app, I don't use the IR blaster, or any of the other options for tuning tv stations. It's simply my HD capture solution. For my needs, it works great. It comes with software (Arcsoft Showbiz) for recording, editing, and burning your footage to disk.

I only use it to record footage to my hard drive. For editing purposes, I use Videoredo TVSuite V4 so I don't have to re-encode my edited footage. With the Showbiz software, it always wants to re-encode unless you're only chopping off the beginning and the end of the file.

For making my final output file that gets burnt to disk I use a free program called MultiAVCHD coupled with ImageBurn (another free program). I burn the file to a Blu ray blank (BD-R) and it comes out with full menus and chapter menus as well. The Showbiz burning program will only let you burn to DVD or DVD-DL disks. It won't work with Blu rays. By using BD-Rs, I can record nearly 3 hours of 1920 x 1080 HD at 18 mbps onto a single 25 GB disk.

The recording quality is excellent. It's maybe slightly nicer that the Hauppauge HD PVR (not by much). The biggest improvement I've found is that when I'm recording AC3 audio with the Colossus, if the source feed has a dropout, which happens occasionally, I don't lose nearly 10 seconds of video feed like the HD PVR use to. That's big for me.

The great thing about the Colossus is that it is a hardware encoder. It does all the heavy lifting itself and leaves your CPU free to do other things at the same time. The only thing you might have trouble with on an older computer is playing back the recorded H.264 file. However, you can still capture with it no problem.

All in all, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

Can be made to work with Windows 7 Media Center

This review is from: Hauppauge Colossus PCI Express Internal HD-PVR (Personal Computers)
I purchased this card to allow for my Windows 7 Media Center (W7MC) PC to capture and display HD video from my set top box tuner. I have played with the included software just for troubleshooting purposes and cannot comment much on that topic. Here is my experience (mostly pertaining to using this card with W7MC).

Pros:

* Easy install (installed the card, loaded the drivers/software off of the included CD and it was up and running)

* Captured video is of very good quality

* Large number of supported inputs (Composite Video, Component Video, HDMI, Optical/toslink Audio, Digital Coaxial Audio, Analog Audio)

* Can be made to work with W7MC with the use of DVBLink (a software add-on from DVBLogic at a cost of $40)

Cons:

* Third-party software is needed to integrate with W7MC

* Not really a Hauppauge issue - but DVBLink software does not support composite video when used to integrate device with W7MC (only HD sources)

* Practically no printed documentation included with product - all documentation is on the included CD.
